Mar 3, 2023 · Oil on the water appears rainbow colored due to the phenomenon called "thin-film interference." When light waves pass through a thin film of oil on top of the water, some of the waves are reflected off the surface of the oil and some pass through the oil and reflect off the surface of the water below.

The thickness of an oil film on water varies from place to place, because it is disturbed by the breeze and whatnot. So at any given point you see the color whose wavelength is reinforced by the specific thickness of the oil at that point. If the thickness varies smoothly, then the colors will vary smoothly, as in a rainbow.

Sep 7, 2021 · This can make it reflect one colour better than others, because the light bouncing off the top (oil-air) surface interacts with the light bouncing off the bottom (water-oil) surface. The thickness of the oil can vary slightly, which means different colours are seen, because each colour of the rainbow has a different wavelength.
