This problem is made worse by Octalink having a large diameter spindle (thus solving the fragile and flexible spindle problem of square taper bottom brackets), but the large diameter spindle unfortunately leaves practically no space for the bearings.

Apr 29, 2018 · On a traditional square taper or Octalink (V1/V2) or ISIS system, the two crank arms never touch -- you're free to mix and match the two crank arms so long as they are both compatible with the bottom bracket's standard (e.g. you could have a Shimano right crank arm and a SRAM left crank arm on a standard square taper, if both crank arms are square taper).

Dec 4, 2024 · Since I have now learned to replace these parts, I would like to be able to also remove the bottom bracket so that I can clean it from time to time and also to have the possibility to replace it when it will be needed as the bike is getting quite old. I believe that the bottom bracket is a Shimano Octalink, but I am not 100% sure.

Feb 24, 2021 · Good news is the price of a new, Claris-level Octalink bottom bracket is a few dollars less than an HT2. The selection of the correct Octalink BB of several choices within the same model number can be tricky, but the specific crankset and a couple parameters of the bike provide the info to select the correct one.

Apr 16, 2024 · As you've noted this proposed crankset requires an Octalink bottom bracket with a 126mm spindle to achieve a 50mm chain line. This requires also, the bike has a 68mm bottom bracket shell width. They do not make an Octalink BB for a 73mm shell with this length of spindle.

Some crank pullers can do both Octalink/ISIS and normal square taper, like Park's one with interchangeable bits: There are also Octalink/ISIS-only crank pullers. Feb 26, 2012 · The Hollowtech and Octalink systems are different because you need to match the crankset to the bottom bracket, that is, you cannot use the BB from one system with the crankset from other system. But any of the bottom brackets can be installed in the same type of frame (the "default"/ISO 68mm wide, 1.37in diameter, 24 TPI). Hope it helps

Jul 13, 2020 · Basically, Octalink is an improved square-taper-style cartridge BB that uses a hollow spindle with splined ends rather than a solid spindle with square taper ends. Argenti is referring to Hollowtech II, but confusingly an Octalink BB/crankset would be yet another option to install in place of your square taper BB/crankset.

Aug 21, 2021 · The move to Hollowtech II from Octalink that you suggested is a wise idea. Octalink was a major failure, its left crank arm loosened and the bearings had so little space the bottom bracket fails early. Hollowtech II fixes the problems of Octalink. The 2x11 vs 9-speed chain could maybe be an issue.
