Nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is the second most common optic neuropathy after glaucoma caused by infarction of the short posterior ciliary arteries that supply the anterior portion of the optic nerve head.

On optical coherence tomography scan performed on average 6 months following onset of NAION, the mean global RNFL thickness (59.8 ± 11.8 μm) was significantly thinner (P < 0.001) compared with uninvolved eyes (95.1 ± 13.9 μm).

Future studies that aim to determine if a drug or intervention is useful for treating NAION may include OCT assessment of the RNFL thickness, because it provides an objective outcome measure correlated with visual performance.
