Aug 18, 2012 · I am on F1-OPT. My application for 17 month STEM extension is pending. My original OPT card has expired. I had applied at the correct time (90 days prior), but USCIS sent me a RFE(Request for evidence) for my photos and hence, I have to wait 60 more days to get a new EAD card. I can still work for 180 days as long as I have applied for the renewal.

Apr 24, 2022 · I know the above statements really contradict one another, but upon investigating with my DSO, I figured my DSO never made a new recommendation for my OPT STEM extension, she only only sent me a copy of old I20 which I used to file the application. At this point, I have a valid work authorization (EAD) until May 30, 2022.

May 7, 2021 · The OPT and STEM OPT extension are still predicated by the "F-1" - meaning you have to be maintaining your F-1 status the entire time you are on your OPT/STEM. And the F-1 does require "nonimmigrant intent" to actually get the visa.
