I always thought jeez was a contraction for "Jesus" (as a blasphemous expletive) and geez was a contraction for "gee whiz" (as a milder expletive). The only way to tell them apart when spoken is the emphasis and jeez is sometimes a little more drawn out.

Dec 25, 2022 · Exactly, I don't care if it's, OMG, oh my gosh, oh my gracious, or even oh my goodness, they're all euphemisms for oh my God, which is considered taking His name in vain. So how hard is it to say wow, or yikes, or even oh my? That way, you're not euphimising oh my God. Just as dang is a euphemism for damn, and jeez for Jesus.

Yep. jeez (interj.) minced oath, also jeeze, 1922, American English, euphemistic corruption of Jesus. gee (interj.) exclamation of surprise, 1895, probably euphemistic for Jesus So, "gee" predates the various versions of "jeez". Interestingly this etymology tool doesn't include "geez", but it seems like a sensible combination of the two.
