Macaranga tanarius is a plant found in South East Asia, Thailand, Papua New Guinea, South China, Taiwan, and eastern Australia. It is commonly seen as a pioneer species in disturbed rainforest areas. Easily recognised for the round veiny leaves.

Native to southeastern Asia, through to Australia and the western Pacific islands, Macaranga tanarius is a medium-sized tree that is cultivated in tropical regions throughout the world for a range of uses, including the production of timber, firewood, traditional medicinal products and shade. It is also used as an ornamental and in reforestation.

Ngauranga is a suburb of New Zealand's capital city, Wellington, in the lower North Island. Situated on the western bank of Wellington Harbour, it lies to the north of the centre of the city. Ngauranga is lightly populated, and for statistical purposes is divided into Ngauranga East and Ngauranga West by Statistics New Zealand.

At Ngauranga, Te Wharepouri, with others, built a whare, Te Akitiwha, for communal use, and later built a separate whare for himself, named Pukeatua. He was in Palliser Bay in 1836, and tried to capture the whaling ship Active, in order to sail to the the Chatham Islands.
