A neurula is a vertebrate embryo at the early stage of development in which neurulation occurs. The neurula stage is preceded by the gastrula stage; consequentially, neurulation is preceded by gastrulation. [1]

Neurulation, the formulation of neurula, occurs around week 4 post-fertilization (week 6 of pregnancy). At this stage the neural tube (which becomes the spinal cord and brain) closes and the tissues that will eventually comprise the brain begin to fold inward.

There are two major ways of forming a neural tube. In primary neurulation, the cells surrounding the neural plate direct the neural plate cells to proliferate, invaginate, and pinch off from the surface to form a hollow tube.
