The Nazgûl (from Black Speech nazg 'ring', and gûl 'wraith, spirit') – introduced as Black Riders and also called Ringwraiths, Dark Riders, the Nine Riders, or simply the Nine – are fictional characters in J. R. R. Tolkien 's Middle-earth.

The Nazgûl (Black Speech for " Ringwraiths ") or Úlairi (Quenya [3]), also known as the Black Riders or simply The Nine, were the dreaded ring-servants of the Dark Lord Sauron in Middle-earth throughout the Second and Third Ages, who in the later years of the Third Age dwelt in Minas Morgul and Dol Guldur. However, this was not the case in the novel. They must have been somewhat important figures for Sauron to notice them and deem them worthy minions, but Tolkien never specified that they were kings.
