Nang Tani (Thai: นางตานี; "Lady of Tani") is a female spirit of the Thai folklore. According to folk tradition, this ghost appears as a young woman that haunts wild banana trees ( Musa balbisiana ), known in Thai language as Kluai Tani (กล้วยตานี).

In the heart of Thailand’s vibrant culture lies the captivating legend of Nang Tani. She is a powerful supernatural being tied to the revered spirit tree. Known as Mae Nang Prai Dtānī, she is a female ghost believed to haunt the Dtanii Dtaay Prai, a special banana tree.

Female ghosts or fairies related to trees such as Nang Ta-khian and Nang Tani are known generically as Nang Mai (นางไม้ 'Lady of the Tree'). [7]

Nang Prai Dtanii is a female ghost just like the more well known Nang Takian, who inhabits a Banana Tree of the Dtanii variety. In order for the ghost to be able to inhabit a Dtanii tree, the tree must be of a special kind called ‘Dtanii Dtaay Prai’, which is a Dtanii tree which dies when it blooms its first flowers.

The Nang Tani is a female ghost, reminiscent of the more well-known Nang Takian, known to inhabit a specific type of banana tree called the Dtanii. However, not all Dtanii trees can host the Nang Tani ghost; it requires a unique variety known as ‘Dtanii Dtaay Prai.’
