SMPTE color bars are a television test pattern used where the NTSC video standard is utilized, including countries in North America. The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) refers to the pattern as Engineering Guideline (EG) 1-1990. [1] Its components are a known standard, and created by test pattern generators.

A test card, also known as a test pattern or start-up/closedown test, is a television test signal, typically broadcast at times when the transmitter is active but no program is being broadcast (often at sign-on and sign-off).

Here are links to zip files containing test patterns for HDTV and common monitor resolutions. Each zip file contains 206 unique patterns arranged in groups by file name. These files are named with the actual resolution and a descriptive resolution identifier taken from a Wikipedia article .

The following test patterns are used for color checker tests. Each patch in each test pattern has a specific value for the Hue, Saturation, and Value (luminance) for each color. These values can be identified on each patch by the identifying numbers.

The Indian-head test pattern is a test card that gained widespread adoption during the black-and-white television broadcasting era as an aid in the calibration of television equipment. It features a drawing of a Native American wearing a headdress surrounded by numerous graphic elements designed to test different aspects of broadcast display.

Although I and Q signals are used for evaluation of the TV signal, they are not used in standard consumer television receivers. In actuality, the bandwidth of the I channel is reduced to about that of the Q channel and each is phase-shifted an additional 33 degrees.
