The NSV is called 12,7 Itkk 96 or 12,7 ilmatorjuntakonekivääri 96 ('12.7 anti-aircraft machine gun 96') in Finland. It is often used as a vehicle-mounted machine gun, and can be seen on the Pasi armoured personnel carrier, the Nasu transport vehicle and the Leopard 2R tank.

The NSVT is the vehicle mounted version of the NSV and is also known as the 6P17. The NSVT is equiped with an electrical trigger. The NSVT is primarily used as anti-aircraft armament for tanks, but can also be found on various other vehicles.

When used on a ground mount the NSV is known as the NSVS. With mechanical trigger it is known as the 6P11 and is available in right and left hand feed and with and without iron sights. It is normally deployed on the 6U6 tripod but an anti-aircraft mount is also available.

All Russian MBTs are traditionally equipped with a 12.7mm AAMG mount. Since the mid-70s, this mount carries the NSV (T) machine-gun. This machine-gun was developed by G.I.Nikitin, Ju.M.Sokolov and V.I.Volkov (hence the name) in 1969 to replace the DShKM MG. NSV utilises the same 12.7x108 cartridge.

The firing mechanism of the NSV consists of a trigger lever with the necessary linkage to the sear, and a mechanical safety. Firing controls must be built into the mount, in the form of a pistol grip on the cradle of the infantry tripod, or a firing solenoid in the cradle of the tank mount.
