NS did lease some Amtrak F40PH units for several months a nunmber of years ago during a power shortage. But I have never heard any serious plans for NS to actually acquire any of the units for freight service.

The two F40PH units are leased from the Chicago Metropolitan Regional Transit Authority for use ONLY in Chicago commuter operations which NS is required to operate. These units have been leased since 1982, but still wear Chicago Metra colors.
