The switch engine was built as Clover Leaf #17 (2nd) by Baldwin in January 1921, but not delivered until December 1922 when the road ended it’s receivership. The engine became NKP #717 in 1924, NKP #17 (5th) in May 1942 and finally NKP #317 (2nd) in February 1947.

These eight locomotives were the pride of the NKP's passenger service and saw 16 years of handling main line passenger trains between Buffalo, NY and Chicago, IL until displaced by diesels in the 1950s. There is one surviving locomotive, number 170, on display at the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, Mo.

The Nickel Plate Road H-6o was a class of 2-8-2 "Mikado" type steam locomotives that were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works (BLW) for the Lake Erie and Western Railroad (LE&W) and were given to the New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railway (NYC&StL) or …

In 1917, the NKP ordered 35 "Mikados" similar to the NYC Class H-5 2-8-2. Ten were ordered from the Lima Locomotive Works and 25 were ordered from the American Locomotive Company.

NKP 17 is on display at the Mad River & NKP Musuem at Bellevue, OH. The identities of the two dorks in the picture are being withheld for the their own protection...from embarassment.

There are six surviving NKP 2-8-4 "Berkshire" type locomotives.
