We describe retinal microvascular pericyte immunohistochemical staining in cryo-sections, whole-mounts, and hypotonic isolated vasculature using antibodies for platelet-derived growth factor receptor β (PDGFRβ) and nerve/glial antigen 2 (NG2).

Neuron-glial antigen 2 (NG2), also known as chondroitin sulphate proteoglycan 4 (CSPG4), is a surface type I transmembrane core proteoglycan that is crucially involved in cell survival, migration and angiogenesis.

NG2, a membrane bound proteoglycan, was shown to be expressed in mural cells during vascular morphogenesis. We have examined the use of NG2 as a marker for pericytes in developing and mature retinal vasculature.
