The block S, wolf's head and chancellor's seal have deep roots in NC State history. They are only appropriate in certain circumstances. The block S is reserved for student, alumni and spirit communications.

The Chancellor’s Seal. The Chancellor’s seal is used for formal or official university documents and special events. Use of this seal is restricted to the Chancellor’s Office and graduation materials, diplomas, and university level awards only. It is not to be used on college or departmental level certificates or documents.

The Great Seal of North Carolina is used to authenticate certain documents issued by the government of North Carolina. The Great Seal was modified to its present form in 1983.

There was a Commercial version of the actual University Chancellor’s Seal that was used for merchandise and was basically just the Chancellor’s Seal with a wavy border to differentiate it. That Commercial Seal was thrown out in favor of the Hallmark for some pretty confusing, conflicting reasoning.

A big change is coming to the SEAL lab with the departure of Ian (now Dr. McGregor) and J (now Dr. Gao) as they successfully defended their dissertations this summer and will be moving on from their time at NCSU!
