First published in 1946, the National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) is an internationally recognized standard that governs and maintains rules for the installation, inspection, repair, and alteration of inservice pressure equipment. The NBIC is adopted into law by most US and Canadian jurisdictions.

Requests for permission to re-stamp or replace nameplates shall be made to the Jurisdiction in which the pressure-retaining item is installed. Application must be made on the Replacement of stamped Data Form, NB-136 (see NBIC Part 2, 5.3.2).

The National Board offers the Certificate of Authorization and R symbol stamp for the repair and/or alteration of boilers, pressure vessels, and other pressure-retaining items.

Repair organizations holding an active National Board Certificates of Authorization for use of either the R, VR, or NR stamps; and/or Pressure relief valve testing organizations holding an active National Board Certificate of Authorization for use of the T/O Certification Mark.

Aug 6, 2019 · The firm that completes any repair to a pressure vessel must hold a valid certificate of authorization to use the copyright-protected repair symbol of the National Board, commonly referred to as a “R”-stamp.

If acquiring an “R” Stamp, obtain a copy of the National Board Inspection Code (NBIC) from National Board. If repairs are going to be made on ASME Code-Stamped tanks, boilers or piping, or if acquiring ASME “Code” Stamps, obtain the applicable Code books from ASME Publications Department (1-800-THE ASME) or at www.asme.org.

Each construction Code Stamp has a required list for the reference Code that are applicable. For the U-Stamp the following Code books are required: Section II, Part A, B, C & D, Section V, & Section IX.
