The BMW N55 is a turbocharged straight-six petrol (gasoline) engine that began production in 2009. The N55 replaced the BMW N54 engine and was introduced in the F07 5 Series Gran Turismo. The N55 was BMW 's first straight-six engine to use a twin-scroll turbocharger. It also won three straight Ward's 10 Best Engines awards in 2011–2013. [1]

Nov 25, 2011 · Personally I would be happy to keep the N55 power output, and have BMW put the 4k premium towards lighter materials. They should make the 335 faster than the 328 by making it lighter. They can't keep adding power forever.

May 20, 2019 · BMW quoted the N54 at 300hp, however, independent testing suggested numbers at the crank closer to 330hp. Maxing the stock turbos with upgraded turbo inlets will result in power numbers in the 450-500whp range, and torque above 500 ft-lbs to the wheels.

Jul 10, 2011 · I've got to say that the N52 is a very smooth engine. It is quiet and produces very little vibrations except for a rather mellow whine. While the N55 is smooth; there is a certain courseness to it and the more vibration seems to permeate the car when under load.

It is a re-engineered version of the BMW M54B25 engine, manufactured in order to meet SULEV regulations in US states until 2006. The M56 was replaced by the BMW N54, which was BMW's first mass-produced turbocharged petrol engine.
