The museum is housed in the 17th-century city palace designed by Tielman van Gameren that is also home to the Chopin Association and the Chopin Institute. The collection consists of around 7000 objects, including manuscripts, letters, photos, jewelry and graphics.

Initially its offices were located at 15 Zgoda St. in Warsaw. In 1953 the Institute was relocated to Ostrogski Castle at 1 Okolnik St., and the Castle also became the home of the museum, the library and the collections of photographs and recordings.
