Leslie Ming Raymond Jackson Mtume (pronounced em-tu-may ) was an American funk and soul group that rose to prominence during the early 1980s and had several R&B hits during its career.

In 1983 he began a three-year stint as a member of the group Mtume and performed on their biggest hit “Juicy Fruit” the same year he joined. He released his co-written “How I Wish You Knew I Cared” in the mid-1990s and it has since appeared on the compilation albums Funk & Boogie From the Great White North and Love Disco Style.

The son of the great jazz saxophonist Jimmy Heath, Mtume was a conga player and percussionist who recorded and toured with Miles Davis and was featured on albums by the Heath Brothers, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, and Freddie Hubbard.
