Chevrotains, or mouse-deer, are diminutive, even-toed ungulates that make up the family Tragulidae, and are the only living members of the infraorder Tragulina. The 10 extant species are placed in three genera, [1][2] but several species also are known only from fossils. [3] .

Known commonly as the mouse deer, this is neither a deer nor a mouse, but a fanged, ancient mammal that’s so elusive, that’s about all we know of the chevrotain. There are at least ten extant species of chevrotain, though they used to be common worldwide.

Chevrotains are found in the warmer parts of Southeast Asia and India and in parts of Africa, and they are classified into the genera Hyemoschus, Moschiola, and Tragulus.

Mouse Deer are renowned for their small and delicate stature, with the Java Mouse-deer being the smallest, weighing around two to four pounds, and the Water Chevrotain (Hyemoschus aquaticus) being the largest, weighing up to 25 – 33 pounds.
