The medieval remains included in the monument extend across the land around Moulton, divided into four areas of protection by the roads, buildings and associated curtilage of the current village.

Moulton, as Moletune, was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, amongst the estates of Baron Richard de Vernon of Shipbrook. The two households possessed a villager and a smallholder, with two ploughlands, one acre of meadow and a single “league” of woodland.
