Macrolepidoptera is a group within the insect order Lepidoptera. Traditionally used for the larger butterflies and moths as opposed to the "microlepidoptera", this group is artificial. However, it seems that by moving some taxa about, a monophyletic macrolepidoptera can be easily achieved.

In this article, I aim to share some of my experiences and tips for photographing moths which can be caught in a trap in the garden. I use a “Skinner-type” moth trap which has a mercury vapour bulb and two sheets of Perspex sloping down to a narrow gap below the bulb.

These excellent guides provide comprehensive coverage of nearly every one of the 800 or so species of larger moths, known as macro-moths. However, for those who are not familiar with the various moth families and faced with several unknown moths, looking right through WTL each time is a daunting and time-consuming process.

Moths are a key part of the wider ecosystem and they sit in the centre of a complex food web. The caterpillars are herbivores eating a range of native plants. Many adult moths drink nectar and are important pollinators. Many of our native plants are likely pollinated by moths.

For smaller moths, however, a clip-on macro lens can be helpful for getting the moth in focus and capturing the detail necessary for an identification.
