Compared to most dinghies, building the basic skill set for the Moth takes a long time. After about 40 hours of sailing the Moth, I can foil with confidence in all directions in the limited window of 8-14 knots of wind.
Although a Moth is more difficult to sail than a conventional singlehander like a Laser, it is common for an experienced sailor to climb on and become foilborne their first time out. a narrow hull with hiking racks supported by lifting hydrofoils under the daggerboard and rudder.
