Monymusk, Jamaica. Did you know that... there is a Monymusk Estate in Jamaica, which is one of the oldest plantations on the island still involved in sugar and rum manufacture! In 1893 there were 148 distilleries on Jamaica, but by 1983 there were only six.

Monymusk Estate is a traditional Scottish Estate in rural Aberdeenshire covering an area of approx 20 square miles. It encompasses the picturesque 18th Century village of Monymusk, farmland, forestry and the imposing House of Monymusk, which has been home to the Grant family since 1713.

The Monymusk Reliquary belongs to a small group of early Irish and Scottish house-shaped reliquaries, of which nine examples survive. From its ornamentation, it is thought to have been made towards the beginning of the 8th Century.

The House of Monymusk is situated about a quarter of a mile from the village beside the River Don. The age of the house is unclear, but it is thought that parts of the building date from between 1205 and 1210.

Monymusk Camp was given the official number 111, also called 'Deer Park, Monymusk'. It had the capacity to hold around 1300 men and officers in approx. 23 accommodation huts and 68 tents on the 25 acre site.

Many of the original maps of Monymusk from the 18th Century are housed at the Scottish Records Museum in Edinburgh. The original maps are very large and rolled up into huge scrolls and large scale copies are stored in the library at the House of Monymusk.

There are some striking resemblances between the architecture of a church near Whithorn, founded by St. Ninian in the 5th or 6th Century and St. Mary's Church, Monymusk. The arches, pillars and capitals are similar in shape, diameter and architectural detail.
