Jan 10, 2015 · While not a terribly visible pattern, the Mole Fly is a relatively good floater owing to its natural CDC wing. As I alluded to earlier, I specifically use beaver fur for the body of this fly as it easily gets saturated, and sinks into its proper position below the surface.

Perched perfectly in the film with the body hanging low and the CDC wing standing tall, the Mole presents the perfect silhouette to the fish. It's plain, simple and deadly effective.

Owing to its soft, porous body hanging below the surface film and the realistic attitude on the water, the Mole fools even the toughest fish time and time again. While not a fly that was designed ahead of time, this simple combination of common materials turns out to be perhaps the most effective hatch matching pattern I have ever used.

Feb 1, 2022 · I have been fishing the Mole Fly for at least the last twenty years and it has become my go-to pattern for any small mayfly hatch. Its unusual “advanced” wing supports the fly on the surface while the body hangs below like that of a crippled or emerging mayfly.

Craven’s Mole Fly is one of his easiest flies to tie, but do not underestimate its production! It is a must-have for imitating small Blue-winged Olives and midges on tailwaters. The Mole fly has a very thin and sparse profile that can be adapted to match any small mayfly hatch.

This is Charlie Craven’s “Mole Fly”. It’s super easy to tie, but does an incredible job of imitating small mayflies and midges struggling to free themselves from their nymphal shucks in the surface film. Think blue winged olives.
