Feb 8, 2010 · FM Narrow / narrowband FM. Typically, FM would be 20 khz or thereabout, and NFM would be 11.25 khz or less. If your scanner doesn't do narrowband FM, it's not a big deal. But if your scanner does have an NFM mode, you should use it on those frequencies that are listed as NFM. That's in a nutshell.

Apr 2, 2016 · "FM was the original FM mode" makes sense when you know the difference between the terms. There is a difference between "FM" and "the FM mode". Clarifying: FM (the designation) was the original FM mode (the modulation scheme). I was not repeating myself in the terms. The terms happen to use the same letters.

I'm not really familar what the difference is or what they both mean but seem to come in clear set on either one. I think if the frequency would be 155.840 or 155.845 it would be set under FM but I noticed most VHF frequencies with a odd ball number in the database ...

Baofengs seem to come set up as FMN by default and have a lot less volume than a radio properly configured. There are very few areas using this new FMN mode for simplex or repeater operation...so anything you can legally transmit on will be fine. The reception will work, though at reduced volumes.

Jul 2, 2015 · FMN usually refers to 12.5KHz bandwidth frequency modulation. Not a huge deal if it isn't set up right, you'll still hear something. Listening with a wide band FM receiver to a narrow band signal will result in low audio.
