"Miss Second Front" Republic P-47D-15-RE 42-76325 Underwing pylons were introduced on the D-15 production blocks. These enabled a drop tank or a bomb to be carried underneath each wing in addition to the stores carried on the belly shackles. Bomb selection increased to two 1000lbs or three 500lbs bombs, with maximum bomb load being 2500lbs.

The planes left Cardonville during the morning for a strafing attack on Nantes ; several P-47 Thunderbolt from 395th fighter squadron of the 368th fighter group. Amongst them, one is in a bad position. It is the « Miss Second Front » n ° 276325 of 1st Lieutenant John Leavitt CARTER.
