The term has no fixed taxonomic meaning and is principally used in aviculture to describe a small macaw belonging to one of a number of different genera, with overall length being the sole criterion for inclusion.

Hahn's mini macaws, Ara nobilis nobilis, also known as Red Shouldered macaws, are the smallest of the miniature macaws. They are predominately deep forest green with dark teal on the top of their heads above their beaks, and crimson red at the bends of their wings on mature birds.

It is the only one of the miniature macaws that has lines of feathers in the bare patches around its eyes. In the wild their typically gregarious personality can become more aggressive at puberty giving them the name Severe. This tendency can be curbed in captivity but the species requires significant handling to make a tame pet.
