Meherabad was an ashram established by Meher Baba in the year 1923, in Arangaon Village as a haven for his followers. The Ashram soon transformed into a place of pilgrimage after the death of Meher Baba and his samadhi in the Ashram.

During World War I, the property that is now Meherabad was a British army camp, leased from an Arangaon farmer. By 1921, this property was acquired by Kaikhushru and Gulmai Irani, whose sons Rustom and Adi were among Meher Baba’s mandali.

Meherabad means "a flourishing land of mercy, kindness and fullness". In April, 1923, Meher Baba and a few of His disciples came along the road from Ahmednagar to Dhond.
