Nick at ArtFactory.com, this solid wood door is forged using centuries-old techniques—mortise-and-tenon joinery, hand-hammered iron hardware, and historically accurate detailing.

It is remarkable therefore that some medieval buildings still contain the original wooden doors or gates that were fitted when the buildings were constructed. This survey will attempt to sum-marise the surviving medieval gates in for-tified buildings throughout the UK and Ireland.

Reclaimed Medieval and Jacobean doors. In the history of Europe, the Middle Ages or medieval period lasted from the 5th to the 15th century. It began with the fall of the Western Roman Empire and merged into the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery.

Having laid out the features to be looked at, it is now possible to describe a brief chronology of the Medieval door. Stylistic dating is always difficult and in all cases it should only be used in conjunction with scientific dating methods (see Chapter 6).
