A metope (/ ˈ m ɛ t ə p i /; Ancient Greek: μετόπη) is a rectangular architectural element of the Doric order, filling the space between triglyphs in a frieze [1] [2] [3] [4]: 43 [5]: 43 , a decorative band above an architrave. [3]

The metopes of the Parthenon are the surviving set of what were originally 92 square carved plaques of Pentelic marble originally located above the columns of the Parthenon peristyle on the Acropolis of Athens. If they were made by several artists, the master builder was certainly Phidias.

The “metopes” were the rectangular slabs that adorned the outside of Doric temples, just above the exterior colonnade. The Parthenon was the only ancient Greek temple to feature sculpted reliefs on all ninety-two of its metopes.

Standing out from the background in high relief, the figures on this metope would have been instantly recognizable to the ancient Greeks, who would see a story of great heroism and triumph. Artwork details

The original metopes were vividly painted, just as was the entire Parthenon, as was customary for Ancient Greek temples and sculpture. Each side of the Parthenon depicts a different mythological and historical theme.
