McLeod (also Sandoun) is a census designated place in eastern Ransom County, North Dakota, United States. An unincorporated community, it was designated as part of the U.S. Census Bureau's Participant Statistical Areas Program on March 31, 2010. [2]

McLeod, North Dakota, is a quaint and unassuming locale known for its serene rural charm and community-focused spirit. While it may not boast bustling attractions or grand historical landmarks, McLeod offers a tranquil escape into the heart of the American Midwest.

McLeod was originally named Sandoun for the many sand dunes in the area. It was later renamed McLeod for local realtor J. J. McLeod. It is located in the Sheyenne National Grasslands and it’s the only village located in the 300 square mile Sandhill area.

It is the only National Grassland in the tallgrass prairie region of the United States. The grassland provides habitat for greater prairie chickens in North Dakota as well as several other sensitive species such as the Dakota skipper and Regal Fritillary.

One of its primary objectives is to preserve historic buildings and landmarks in McLeod and the surrounding areas. The society has undertaken several restoration projects, including the McLeod Depot, which was built in 1906 and now serves as a museum.
