Created on the expansion of the parliament in 1984, this electorate is named after Sir John McEwen, Country Party leader from 1958 to 1971, Minister for Trade and Industry 1956 to 1971, and Prime Minister for three weeks following the disappearance of Harold Holt in 1967.
