A powerful new retrospective study on perinatal mortality has used reports from MBRRACE-UK, commissioned by HQIP on behalf of NHS England, to identify the maternity services that are most consistently reporting higher-than-average deaths in England.

Utilizing MBRRACE-UK definitions and designations, including coloured bands (red and amber indicate higher death rates), we devised a scoring method to determine which trusts most consistently reported higher-than-average rates of EPM throughout seven years.

Signs to be aware of – red flag symptoms (in yourself, a loved one, or friend) • Do you have new feelings and thoughts which you have never had before, which make you disturbed or anxious? • Are you experiencing thoughts of suicide or harming yourself in violent ways?

• New expressions or acts of violent self-harm are ‘red flag’ symptoms. Take them seriously. • Be aware of sleep disturbance and stigma. • Recognise the complexity and multiple challenges facing each woman you care for, including any history of trauma. • Pre-birth and post-birth care is vital.

The main purpose of MBRRACE-UK is to conduct robust national surveillance and investigate the deaths of women and babies who die during pregnancy or shortly after pregnancy in the UK. By investigating these deaths, MBRRACE-UK hopes to prevent similar deaths or serious complications in the future.
