In the Outback, she becomes "The Jungle Queen", an all-powerful goddess. She spends so much time dwelling in her Outback that the real world and the Outback gradually become unstable. One night, she accidentally hits a homeless man with her car.

She is unaware that in The Outback, an alternate dimension that resembles prehistoric Australia, The Maxx is a powerful warrior, and she is The Leopard Queen, an Amazonian warrior goddess. In the animated series, she is voiced by Glynnis Talken.

In the real world, the Maxx is a vagrant, a "homeless man living in a box", while in the Outback, he is the powerful protector of the Jungle Queen. The Jungle Queen exists in the real world as Julie. While the Maxx is aware of the Outback, Julie is not, though it is integral to both of their stories.

Julie Winters is a very complex character, the center of the Maxx universe (at least for issues 1-20). When Julie was little she used to pretend she was a jungle queen and have adventures in the Outback, inspired by stories that her Uncle Artie told her.

The Maxx shifts between these worlds against his will. Here, homeless, he lives in a box in an alley. The only one who really cares for him is Julie Winters, a freelance social worker. But in Pangea, the other world, he rules the Outback, and is the protector of Julie, his jungle queen. There he cares for her.
