Feb 24, 2013 · For a better controlled process, build yourself a simple jig. Get 2 paint mixing sticks (for free from Home Depot), cut them to appropriate lengths (slightly longer than the length of your mast) and glue to each on one side a strip of medium grade sand paper.

Mast hoops are commonly used on gaff-rigged boats to allow the sail to slide up and down the mast. Hoops are worth extra inspection and care, because replacements are hard to find and expensive to purchase when you do find them. Although they are small, they might seem intimidating to fashion.

Our masts ,kits and those being built by ourselves to completion all have neat CNC cut MDF jigs. Each jig is exactly the right section and has a base that just slots together with the vertical jig. You will need a bench or stands nearly as long as the spar itself.
