Until the 1960s the most popular form of mascara was the cake or block type. In the nineteenth century it had been known as water cosmetique or mascaro and it was only after 1900 that its name began to change.

Mascara was now available in a tube with a wand applicator (invented in the 1950s), but solid block products were still used. Block mascaras were activated with water (or more realistically spit) and mixed with the little brush that came with it.

Mar 19, 2021 · I remember using this in my teens in the 60s. It took forever to put on and wasn’t even remotely waterproof. It was very common to spit on it, not very hygienic. I didn’t realise you could still get it.

Block mascaras were activated with water or, more realistically, spit, and mixed with the little brush that came with it. Max Factor’s block mascara could really be built up. There was also cream mascara in a tube that came with a little brush.
