Along with a bow, there is in Ruwedel’s work an about-face, for in his current series we see neither people nor sprawling buildings, freeways, functioning swimming pools and conventional beach scenes.

After 25 years of capturing American deserts, barren landscapes and remote locations, photographer Mark Ruwedel is still drawn to their stark beauty. Born in Pennsylvania, Ruwedel studied photography at Concordia University in Montreal, later teaching there.

Mark Ruwedel is a Canadian photographer. Ruwedel received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kutztown State College, Kutztown, Pennsylvania in 1978, and went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts degree from Concordia University in Montreal, Québec in 1983.

Mark Ruwedel (American, b. 1954) is a photographer who examines the interaction between society and the landscape of the western United States, creating works that are in his words “about the interrogation of human values, not only about beauty or geology.”
