Princess Peach (casually Peach, usually known as Princess Toadstool outside Japan prior to Yoshi's Safari) is a major character in the Super Mario franchise, the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, and the love interest of Mario.

In the game, Mario has a dream of a staircase leading to a door to another world. A voice identifies the world as the dreamland of Subcon, and asks for Mario's help in defeating the villainous frog named Wart, a tyrant who has cursed Subcon and its people.

Princess Peach (which was always her name outside of anglophone regions) is a non-playable character in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. Peach is kidnapped by Bowser again and eventually rescued by Mario or Luigi after he defeats Bowser. Peach is found in a room behind a door, and her subjects celebrated around them after she recited a poem.

Since 1985, she is the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom. She's usually portrayed as the damsel in distress and has been kidnapped by Bowser numerous times, usually being rescued by Mario and Luigi, as well as by Yoshi, Toad, Wario and a cast of others in the Mario RPGs on less frequent occasions.
