Manzanar is the site of one of ten American concentration camps, where more than 120,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II from March 1942 to November 1945. Although it had over 10,000 inmates at its peak, it was one of the smaller internment camps.

Manzanar, located in the Owens Valley of California between the Sierra Nevada on the west and the Inyo mountains on the east, was typical in many ways of the 10 camps. About two-thirds of all Japanese Americans interned at Manzanar were American citizens by birth.

Located in Owens Valley, approximately 225 miles northeast of Los Angeles, Manzanar is perhaps the most well-known of the ten War Relocation Authority camps. The camp was built on 6,000 acres of desert terrain, bordered by the Sierra Nevada mountain range, where temperatures reached 110 degrees in summer and dropped below freezing in winter.
