Dec 27, 2023 · The manubrium is the superior part of the sternum lying at the level of T3-T4 vertebrae. It forms the superior wall of the anterior mediastinum and its superior border also contributes to the superior thoracic aperture ( thoracic inlet) .

Sternal variations can occur in manubrium, body, or xiphoid. With the increasing use of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT), the sternal variations can be identified more frequently. In a large series, sternal variations and anomalies were characterized based on macroscopic [1] and radiographic [2] appearances in autopsy populations.
