Sep 7, 2015 · Stay in either Riomaggiore or Manarola, whichever town you can get a nice room. Try for a sea view. Volastra is farther away uphill. Whichever town you choose, the train can get you to the next one in 5 minutes, so you can spend time in both.

May 8, 2017 · Of the two, Manarola will likely be quieter especially if you choose lodgings slightly uphill from the harbour area. The harbour area of Vernazza is somewhat "enclosed" with buildings, which tends to create somewhat of an "echo chamber". Vernazza is somewhat compact, so it doesn't seem to handle crowds as well as some of the other towns.

We preferred staying in Manarola over the other towns for many reasons (less crowded, charming town, easy to walk around, very quiet once the day trippers leave). One of our favorite places to eat in Manarola is Nessun Dorma. The view is stunning, food and wine excellent.
