The prehistoric population of the Makah is estimated between approximately 2,000 to 4,000 people. Today there are roughly 1,500 living in and around Neah Bay. We invite you to learn more about our tribe, history, and traditions in the pages below.

The Makah Tribe has called the spectacular Neah Bay, Washington area home since time immemorial. The name Makah was attributed to the Tribe by the neighboring tribes, meaning “people generous with food” in the Salish language.

Various fish and marine mammals served as staple foods in the early Makah diet and remain so even today. Halibut were caught, dried or smoked and stored in large quantities to be used in the winter. There were varieties of bottom fish caught year round.

Makah whaling tradition provides oil, meat, bone, sinew and gut for storage containers: useful products, though gained at a high cost in time and goods. Watch the video and read below for a full history about Makah Whaling.
