Mahmud Gawan, also known as Khawaja Mahmud Gilani, was an important nobleman of the Bahmani kingdom, and served Shahabuddin Mahmud III as his prime minister for almost 20 years from 1463 to 1481. He was a Persian trader who arrived in India (Deccan) at the age of 42 and entered the Bahmani kingdom's service.

Mahmud Gawan, recognizing the threat posed by the Vijayanagara Empire, implemented defensive strategies to protect the territorial integrity of the Bahmani Sultanate. He fortified strategic locations, organized the military, and implemented measures to strengthen the sultanate's defenses.

Achievements of Gawan, invited the jealousy of the Indian Muslim nobles and through a conspiracy against him they succeeded in getting death orders for him from the Sultan when he was drunk. When the Sultan came to know about the real truth, he was deeply grieved and died within a year of the murder of his faithful Prime Minister.

Gawan was able to prevail over him due to active help from Gujarat kingdom. He was an able administrator who brought many revenue reforms.
