Haven is the largest shipwreck in the region and lies at a depth of 33 metres (108.3 ft) to 83 metres (272.3 ft) off the coast of Genoa. It is a popular tourist attraction with recreational scuba divers.

On 11 April 1991, the Cyprus-flagged Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) ‘MT Haven’, formerly ‘Amoco Milford Haven’, had returned from the Persian Gulf and was unloading an Iranian cargo of 230,000 tons of crude oil to a floating platform, about 11 km off Genoa.

On April 11, 1991, the 334 meter long, 232,162 dwt VLCC tanker Haven suffered an explosion, caught fire and sank off the coast of Genoa, Italy. The Haven not only became one of the largest shipwrecks in the world, but also one of the worst oil pollution incident in the Mediterranean Sea.

MT Haven, formerly Amoco Milford Haven, is a VLCC-class oil-tanker (Very Large Crude Carrier), in other words a super-tanker, built by Astilleros Españoles S.A. in Cadiz, Spain, the sister ship of Amoco Cadiz, which sank in 1978 and polluted the Atlantic coast off France for decades.
