The official seal of Michigan State University represents the university’s founding in 1855 as the nation’s premier land-grant university and its legacy of democratizing higher education. College Hall — Michigan State University’s first academic building — is at the center of the seal.

The wordmark and helmet may be used widely by the MSU community, while the university seal and block S are available for more selective use. A wordmark/helmet combination mark also is available.

The Great Seal of the State of Michigan depicts the coat of arms of the U.S. state of Michigan on a light blue field. On the dark blue shield the Sun rises over a lake and peninsula, a man holding a long gun with a raised hand represents peace and the ability to defend his rights.

On January 11, 1822, the General Assembly adopted an act providing for the Great Seal of the State of Missouri. The legislation specifically described the symbols on the seal and their placement. The Secretary of State serves as the official keeper of the Great Seal.
