mkt gp39-2 380. A former Kennecott Copper unit built with high cab, which was lowered to normal position prior to sale to the Katy; note the darker paint behind the cab where the original steps were. It's still in KCC yellow and wears a very small OKKT herald below the cab.

Apr 4, 2025 · MKT GP39-2s were delivered in 1984. The final 39-2s built, they were constructed using the then-current GP49 style carbodies. The units were some of the best and most reliable locomotives available on the MKT during this time; MKT liked them so much that they also acquired 9 former Kennecott Copper 39-2s. MKT FEATURES: RS5T and A-200 horns

According to Don Strack's website, this batch of former MKT GP39-2's were renumbered into the 1200 series. If you have ever heard a turbocharged 12 cylinder EMD locomotive under load, they sound sweet!
