PRS for Music Limited (formerly The MCPS-PRS Alliance Limited) is a British music copyright collective, made up of two collection societies: the Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society (MCPS) and the Performing Right Society (PRS).

The Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society (MCPS) is an organisation that collects royalties and protects rights for music publisher, song writer and composer members, when their music is reproduced, in any format – including online, physical and synchronised. The MCPS collects and pays royalties to members when their music is:

PRS for Music is the home of the Performing Right Society (PRS) and the Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society (MCPS). MCPS collects and distributes mechanical royalties to songwriters, composers and publishers when their works have been copied or reproduced.

The Music Publishers Association (MPA), the trade association for music publishers in the UK, became the owners of MCPS. This union established MCPS as the only publisher-led collection society globally, which is still true to this day.

Operatic composer and soprana Liza Lehmann becomes the first official member of PRS. 1923 - PRS issues its first licence to the BBC. 1924 - Mecolico and the Copyright Protection Society (CPS) merge to form the Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society (MCPS). 1925 - PRS establishes its first agency in South Africa.

In 2009, PRS and MCPS-PRS Alliance realigned their brands and became PRS for Music. PRS represents their songwriter, composer and music publisher members’ performing rights, and collects royalties on their behalf whenever their music is played or performed publicly.
