If you’re like me and crave the bass dynamics, slam and articulation that is usually associated with solid-state, but want a fuller, richer sound than most solid-state preamps, the MBL 5011 is a no-brainer (unless, I suspect, you can afford the MBL 6010).

Mar 8, 2011 · As JV points out, the MBL sound is a touch darker, perhaps a shade more beautiful than life, but in tandem with its remarkable air, transparency to the recording venue, and outstanding detail, I’d say that’s a compliment.

Oct 21, 2008 · I have owned and appreciated the MBL 5011. It is a very fine preamp, and close to the flagship 6010D in sound quality, though not as resolving. I eventually traded it in for two reasons: it lacks a balance control and its output impedance of 100 ohms, though relatively low, is still too high for getting the best out of my amp (a Burmester 911 Mk3).

The mbl 5011 has the high-tech, contemporary look of modern materials and design. It has a serious, no-nonsense aspect about it—not quite severe, but definitely masculine looking—which most people found attractive.

The MBL 5011 handles large, complex material well, sounding powerful without a dynamic ceiling and not losing its composure at high volumes. It is linear across its wide bandwidth and has excellent treble integration.
