This compact profile made it easier to maneuver in the close-quarters environment of trench warfare and urban combat. To further enhance its field durability, the MAS-36 was fitted with robust, foldable sights calibrated for ranges up to 1,200 meters.

The 7.5x54 cartridge the MAS 36 is chambered for features a 0.309" 139-gr. bullet rated at (an optimistic) 2,800 fps, putting it more-or-less in the .308 class without a lot of quibbling over grains, fps or thousandths of an inch.
